People For the American Way Foundation conducts research, legal, and education work on behalf of First Amendment freedoms and democratic values; monitors, exposes, and challenges the Religious Right movement and its political allies; identifies, trains, and supports the next generation of progressive leaders through its Young People For youth leadership programs and its Young Elected Officials Network; and carries out nonpartisan voter education, registration, civic participation, and election protection activities.
Young People For (YP4) is a youth-driven and youth-led program that brings together young leaders and activists from across the nation who are eager to ensure that progressive voices are heard on critical issues, such as the judiciary, religious freedom, economic justice, civil rights and constitutional protections. This program is designed for serious people who are interested in being leaders and making a difference. Together we are building a long-term network of emerging leaders committed to protecting our nation’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
The Leadership Coordinator is a key member of the Young People For team and will report to the Deputy Director of Education and Leadership Development. The Leadership Coordinator must be a strong organizer, facilitator and trainer and be able to manage relationships and trainings for advanced leadership academies. The candidate should be a strong writer and have substantial knowledge of the youth progressive movement, have experience with campus and/or youth organizing and must demonstrate a strong work ethic.
General responsibilities:
- Manage program components of all advanced leadership trainings designed for fellows who have completed the first year of the Fellowship program.
- Execute and evaluate the Internship Program and retreats for the Leadership Academy.
- Manage core national allies and partnerships on trainings designed for advanced leadership fellows.
- Will work to identify the critical professional development issues facing young people and develop programs, materials and resources to address those issues for online audiences.
- Manage the YP4 Sustainability in the Movement program including mentors, informational interviewees, one-on-one coaching, and group professional development coaching.
- Serve as liaison to the Front Line Leaders Academy by providing curriculum and training support, recruitment, selection and evaluations of the program.
- Manage relationship with consultants to ensure the successful implementation of contract and to coordinate consultant’s schedule with fellowship groups.
- Manage department interns in the summer, spring and fall.
Specific responsibilities:
- Sustainability in the Movement
- Individualized empowerment coaching with Cathy Wasserman
- Group coaching calls
- Career coaching and resume review as needed
- IMAPs (Individualized Movement Action Plans)
- Informational interviews with partners, allies and fellows
- Maintain Sustainability Center online
- Internship Program
- Manage: recruitment, outreach, retreat, curriculum and budget
- Evaluation: Maintain program records, documentation and participant surveys for quarterly program evaluations
- Mentorship program
- Internship and project-based funding awards
- Sustainability in the Movement package
- Leadership Academy
- Leadership Academy Retreats in CT, DC and NYC: event planning, logistics and evaluation
- Sustainability in the Movement program
- Support Leadership Academy curriculum design
- Front Line Leaders Academy
- Support Young Elected Officials (YEO) program staff on recruitment and candidate selection
- Support YEO staff on trainings
- Support YEO staff on program evaluations
- Consultant management: Manage career coaching consultant contract and evaluation of coaching services.
- Education and Leadership Department interns: Manage department interns in the summer, fall and spring; develop orientation and management tools and events for YP4 summer intern program.
Qualifications:
- 3–5 years related work experience.
- Strong commitment to professional development.
- Good interpersonal skills, including ability to work effectively with a variety of people.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Previous experience in staff recruitment and/or job placement desirable.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize complex information and present in a usable format.
- Ability to work independently, with supervision, and as part as a team.
- Familiarity with the progressive community, progressive issues, community organizing, and the political process.
- Ability and willingness to work additional hours when needed.
- Computer literacy and experience in using the Internet in progressive work.
- Experience with student or youth organizing.
- Commitment to the values of Young People For and People For the American Way Foundation.
