Story and Vision

Org Start:

The spark that ignited SFA was the 230-mile March for Dignity, Dialogue and a Fair Wage from Ft. Myers to Orlando, Florida, led by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in February 2000. This march provided the opportunity for students from several Florida colleges to learn about and directly participate in the movement to end "sweatshops in the fields."

But it was the March for Farmworker Justice from Quincy, Florida to the governor's mansion in Tallahassee in January 2001 that truly consolidated SFA into an organized network.  Over 30 students from across the state participated in the march, gathering over 1500 signatures on a petition to deliver to the governor.

Best Known:

The successful4-year Taco Bell Boycott, which resulted in an agreement between the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and Yum Brands, Taco Bell's parent company.  This agreement guaranteed better wages and working conditions for farmworkers in their supply chain.

Boot the Bell - in conjunction with the Taco Bell boycott, "Boot the Bell" was a campaign in which students across the country called upon their institutions to remove Taco Bell restaurants, products and sponsorships from their campuses until Taco Bell agreed to take responsibility for the sweatshop conditions endured by farmworkers in their supply chain.  There were 22 successes in the Boot the Bell campaign, including the removal of Taco Bell franchises from UCLA, Portland State University, University of Chicago and more.

The McDonald's Campaign, in which farmworker from Immokalee called upon the fast food giant to take Taco Bell's lead in addressing the conditions of farmworkers in its supply chain.  After a nearly two-year campaign, and on the cusp of a national boycott, McDonald's agreed to all of the CIW's demands.
